The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international peacebuilding organisation that supports and promotes nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation and inclusive, locally driven social change, through research, action, and policy engagement. LPI works with civil society, state, and non-state actors and institutions in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan as well as Djibouti, Eritrea, South Sudan, and Uganda), the Great Lakes (DRC), and Sweden.

Through the “Capacities & Space: Civil Society at the Centre of the Triple Nexus” (3N) Programme, LPI is seeking to deepen our engagement and support in the implementation of, and collaborative learning around, the Humanitarian-Development-Peacebuilding Nexus (often called the “Triple Nexus”) in the Horn of Africa and Great Lake regions, in order to strengthen the capacity, and expand the space, of civil society working in these regions.

The Overall Goal of the 3N Programme is: Improve understanding and application of Triple Nexus approaches to support enhanced civil society capacities among various local, national, regional, and international organisations, and sustained or expanded civic space in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes.

This will be achieved through:

1. Enhancing capacities

   — A range of approaches to capacity enhancement and exchange create the conditions for use of Triple Nexus approaches by diverse organisations, networks, and alliances;

2. Resourcing and proof of concept

   — The effectiveness of Triple Nexus approaches is demonstrated through practical, small-scale testing based on locally defined and led priorities and models;

3. Reflective learning and adaptation

   — Collective knowledge on the Triple Nexus is built through participatory learning processes.

1. Interface/Engagement

• The PA-3N will report directly to 3N Programme Manager (PM-3N). In addition, she/he will work closely with the PM-3N and other members of the LPI Programme team, including Country and Programme Managers, the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Process Lead, and other staff.

• The PA-3N will liaise with the Uppsala Finance Coordinator and Grants Officer for programme related issues.

• Externally, s/he will engage with relevant stakeholders, including government, civil society, and academic partners, to ensure effective implementation of the 3N Programme and other initiatives.

• The PA-3N will lead the engagement with Sida Stockholm and other key actors in Sweden (i.e Church of Sweden, Swedish Mission Council and members) while coordinating closely with the PM-3N.

2. Job Summary

The PA-3N, will support the implementation of LPI’s “Capacities and Space: Civil Society at the Centre of the Triple Nexus” (3N) Programme in close coordination with the PM-3N. The PM-3N (Nairobi based) holds responsibility and accountability for the management, implementation, coordination and delivery of the 3N Programme, while the PA-3N (Sweden based) will complement this role by providing strategic and technical advice, quality assurance, learning support, specialised engagement relevant to the programme and engagement with Sida and other Swedish stakeholders. The PA-3N will provide technical advice, programme quality assurance, Triple Nexus expertise for learning and research. They will work closely with various stakeholders within and external to the Institute to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the 3N Programme, as well as contributing to other LPI programmes and initiatives. The PA-3N will lead engagement and communication with the donors – Sida and the Church of Sweden, and other stakeholders within the Swedish context, in close collaboration with the PM-3N.

4. Key Duties & Responsibilities

Programme Development

• Support the implementation of the 3N Programme, ensuring alignment with LPI’s vision, mission and values, and responsiveness to the priorities of communities and other stakeholders.

• Provide support to programme activities such as trainings, workshops, meetings, field visits, and events, in collaboration with LPI teams (3N team, programmes, finance, logistics).

• Ensure programme quality and relevance through collaborative learning, documenting best practices, lessons learned, adaptations and recommendations for future actions.

• Ensure that programmatic and final donor reports meet the donor requirements, timeline, the programme strategy, and the organisational standards.

• Support the broader LPI programme team to draft and review proposals and concept notes and development of fundraising strategies that increase donor support for the Institute’s programmes and projects, particularly as related to the 3N thematic.

• In coordination with the Director of Programmes and Programme/Country Managers, identify and engage new partners and donors.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)

• Support the development and implementation of the MEL system and framework in accordance with programme strategy, donor requirements, and organisational standards.

• Facilitate learning and reflection sessions and events, as well as coordination and collaboration meetings and events with partners and other stakeholders.

• Support high-quality research on various aspects of the 3N with MEL staff, and partners.

• Identify and document best practices, lessons, and success stories from the programme results, and research processes and outcomes, sharing them with relevant audiences and platforms.

• Conduct regular and timely field visits and assessments to monitor and verify the quality and effectiveness of programme activities. Provide feedback and recommendations for improvement.

• Contribute to the design of, and participate in, cross-organisational reflection activities, in alignment with LPI’s Knowledge and Learning Strategy.

Capacity Strengthening

• Support the design and develop context-specific training curricula, materials, and methodologies with the LPI Knowledge and Learning team, 3N/LPI team members and partners.

• Support in the delivery of high-quality training on various peacebuilding, conflict sensitivity and conflict prevention topics to various stakeholders. Including developing online trainings on Fabo.

• Support the monitoring and evaluation of the impact and outcomes of the training and provide actionable feedback and recommendations for improvement and follow-up support.

Partnership and Relationship Building

• Build and maintain partnerships and relationships with various stakeholders, particularly in the Swedish context, such as civil society organisations, government agencies, donors, and communities, to advance the programme objectives and activities.

• Communicate and coordinate regularly and transparently with partners and other stakeholders, ensuring they are informed, engaged, and consulted in the programme planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation processes.

Coordination and Communication

• Support the development and implementation of communication strategy to raise the visibility and awareness of the programme, particularly among target audiences in Sweden.

External Relations and Representation

• The PA-3N will lead engagement and communication with the donors of the project – Sida and the Church of Sweden, and other stakeholders within the Swedish context, in close collaboration with the PM-3N.

• Monitor and analyse the external environment and provide regular updates and strategic recommendations on emerging issues, trends, and opportunities.

• Represent LPI in meetings, dialogues, networks, coalitions, forums, and working groups, sharing insights, and contributing to policy and decision-making in peacebuilding and the 3N.

• Build and sustain relationships with key institutions, leaders, civil society, the private sector, and the media relevant for LPI’s policy work.

• Engage with internal and external stakeholders on LPI’s priorities and goals and advise the leadership on engagement opportunities.

• Support LPI’s overall relationship to Sida in Stockholm and attend related meetings on the 3N in Sweden.

5. Job Requirements (profile)

Educational qualification

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in peace and conflict studies, development studies, political science, international relations, or a related social science field.

Language requirements

• Fluency in written and spoken in both English and Swedish required.

• Knowledge of French and/or other languages in the contexts where LPI works is also advantageous for engagement with LPI partners.

Relevant Experience

• A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in peacebuilding and conflict transformation or a related field for bachelor’s degree holders, or 3 years for master’s degree holders.

• Experience working on Triple Nexus programming.

Skills & Other Competencies

• Knowledge of Sida donor requirements.

• Strong programmatic and financial knowledge.

• Experience with participatory facilitation and training design and implementation.

• Computer skills, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and other video conferencing platforms. Knowledge of Fabo an asset.

• Ability to travel frequently to LPI offices in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes.
