Concise Report on the workshop Dialogue on Contentious Issues in Ethiopian Historiography

This report, derived from a workshop organized by the Association of Ethiopian Historians in partnership with the Life & Peace Institute, captures all the rich points of discussion and analysis from the event. Held over two days, the workshop brought together over thirty invited scholars—including experts from Europe and Nigeria—and a Commissioner from the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC). It explored critical themes like inclusivity, identity, national symbols, and the tension between state-building and nation-building, urging a shift from entrenched binary narratives toward an inclusive “third space” in historiography. The full report documents the eleven presented papers, the diverse perspectives debated, and arrives at recommendations aimed at informing Ethiopia’s national dialogue and broader historical discourse.
